3:00 am January 13, 2015

Wellll, we left Reno bright and early yesterday morning (it feels weird calling it yesterday since we are still on the road), but not before Deb made us one last delicious breakfast including an egg scramble, toast and chorizo. We even took some left over chorizo for the road. I knew when we left that we had a long journey ahead of us. The original plan was to take about 8 hours to get to Salt Lake City, meet up with one of Dan’s friends for a few hour break there and then continue on for another 8 hours to Denver, which would get us there around 4am.

Dan, Dave and Deb

These guys could probably quite there day jobs and become chefs.

Another one of our furry friends, Kirby, with her UT colored bows!
Everything started out on schedule. I napped for the first couple hours, which always makes time go by faster. The drive out of Nevada was filled with the same beautiful mountain scenery we had become accustomed to the last few days. Unfortunately, the first few hours of driving in Utah were not quite as beautiful. Instead it was miles on miles of salt flats, which our described perfectly by their name. Flat and salty. We may or may not have actually proved to ourselves that they were salty. You also know you are in a truly boring area when they have to put signs on the roads with warnings for drowsy drivers. We got to the end of the salt flats as we approached Salt Lake City (SLC). After making great time on the first half of our drive, we were slowed down significantly as we encountered a wintry mix of rain and snow in SLC. It turned out Dan’s friend wouldn’t be able to meet up with us, so we forged ahead. And by forged ahead, I mean we drove less than 10mph for more than 50 miles past SLC. Even after an hour into Wyoming, we were only able to drive about 45mph or so. At this point we stopped in a little town in Wyoming for some dinner at Subway, for the second time on this trip. Both Kileigh and I went the adventurous route and tried their lesser known menu items of soup and salad. The salads get a  thumbs up while the soup was only mediocre. Unlike us, Dan went the healthy route for dinner choosing corn nuts, sunflower seeds and an energy drink.

The most boring driving of all time..salt flats...
High quality photography. For those who can't tell it says Wyoming.

Eventually the roads cleared up and we picked up the pace. We felt like we were making good time, so when we saw a billboard for a rest stop with 75 cent ice cream cones, we couldn't pass up such a once in a life-time opportunity. The rest stop was called Little America and was rather elaborate, containing showers and restrooms, a hotel, a mechanic shop, gas pumps, and of course, the 75 cent ice cream cones we were craving. It was a good morale boost. Also, Kileigh remembered about her pre-trip plan to collect a post card from every state we visit and grabbed a WY one while were there.

So much ice cream for $2.25
It’s currently just after 3am and we are about 1.5 hours from Denver still. We have been dealing with heavy fog for the last hour or so, which has slowed us down a bit. On a side note, one thing that always surprises me about long road trips, this one included, is that the best conversations both serious and funny occur in the wee hours of the morning.

Also with Dan at the wheel currently, we just passed the 3000 mile marker for our journey.  He also cracked open his forth bag of sunflower seeds of the trip today. Between the sunflower seeds and coffee, I’m hoping we can make it the rest of the way into town without few to no additional stops.
